Recent Happenings

Lance spoke at Botanica at the beginning of the month, sharing about Chautauqua Hills' history, our growing practices, showing pictures from the fields & farm, and taking questions from an audience of about 40 people.

We were featured recently in a full front-page article in the Independence Daily Reporter. We also had a brief mention appear in The Wichita Eagle, and we were a featured farm in Our Local Food's email newsletter this month. We have many new subscribers who just learned about our farm through the newspaper - welcome to our new Berry Good Friends!

Love Local Food!

Guest Interview with Paula Miller
Below is a brief excerpt from an upcoming guest interview on our blog - be sure to check our website on Sunday, June 19th, for the full interview!

Tell us a little bit about yourself:  I grew up on a farm 45 minutes from Wichita.  I am a KSU grad trained in nutrition.  After college I joined the Army, saying I'd never return to Kansas, but after six years away realized I truly love home and returned.  Here I met my husband, Chris, who is a chef, and shares my passion for good food.

So what exactly is Love Local Food and how did it get started?   I have taught nutrition for a local college for the last few years.  One September, after viewing "Food, Inc." my husband and I realized our food choices make a huge impact in things other than taste and nutrition.

That semester, I started talking to my students about the benefits of choosing locally sourced foods and found they were excited about choosing these foods, but when they asked where to purchase them, I wasn't sure what to tell them.  After all, I got my food from my farming family, but we didn't have enough for my class.

I realized there was a need to connect consumers to producers even when farmers' markets aren't in season.  Therefore, Love Local Food and the Wichita Area Local Producers List began.  Love Local Food is the name we have given to our endeavor of increasing local purchasing of foods in this area. (to be continued...)
